Next time you plan on visiting Old San Juan, you MUST make it a point of having lunch at MESA VERDE. Loyda & Gabriel have created a delightful little spot, more like a homy dining room in a private tuscan home, on Tetuán Street, right across from the BBVA bank building. Besides the beautiful fresh veggies from SIEMBRA TRES VIDAS (of course), their favorite ingredients include jasmine rice, fish, tofu, nuts and lots of herbs. According to Loyda, nothing gets waisted. Left over herbs are utilized to make refreshing tea infusions and softly-sweet glaces for their carrots. Our artisan lunch was delicious: we tried the root deep dish with mushroom protein and cheese and also the vegetable lasagna, accompanied by glazed carrots and, last but not least, a fresh crisp salad from our harvest. Check it out: open tuesdays thru fridays, noon till 3pm.
